Hants County Exhibition 250th Anniversary

This painting was created by local artist Susan Sweet, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Hants County Exhibition.  Sweet has a lifetime involvement and interest in the exhibition, and her father, Ernest Sweet, was president of the Exhibition in 1965.

Sweet’s practice of painting is grounded in having lived her life in rural Hants County, surrounded by various aspects of agriculture.  She chose oxen for this painting because they have been working the Hants County land for the 250 years of the fair.

Church steeple comes crashing down

Today, a church steeple came crashing down... thankfully it wasn't Ulgedook's steeple.

"A crane carrying a church steeple collapsed in front of a crowd in Milton on the South Shore on Friday afternoon.  The steeple was being removed from the 150-year-old Milton Christian Church on Highway 8 at about 2:30 p.m. when the crane buckled and the steeple came crashing to the ground."

Fox Field Cottages

We took a break from Ulgedook Cottage this past week to enjoy some time at Foxfield Cottages, located in the picturesque village of French River, Prince Edward Island... and what a wonderful time we had (we did not want to return to the mainland).

Here are some photos:

Frisbee Golf at the MARC

At Miller Point Peace Park in Dayspring, you can enjoy a nine-hole game of Frisbee Golf (see below for details).

District of Lunenburg Recreation

There is lots to do in the District of Lunenburg.  Check out their Recreation webpage to learn about the District's programs, special events, facilities, parks, beaches, trails, open spaces and community partnerships.  Click here to view Trail Maps in the District.

Particularly appealing is the Municipal Activity and Recreation Complex in Dayspring, better known as the MARC, which is a year round indoor/outdoor recreation facility offering a program building, residence building, outdoor rinks toboggan runs, softball fields, cross county run course, playground, bmx bike park, and 100 acres of open space which includes fields, woods, fishing ponds, brooks, 10km of trails, and large grass areas for picnics or socializing.

Also in Dayspring is the Miller Point Peace Park, which offers 5 km of walking trails that are all level, smooth, and accessible to walkers, strollers, and wheelchairs. Outdoor washrooms are also available, as well as ample parking at the park entrance.

We look forward to grilling the moose steak that was generously given to us by neighbour Mike.  Yummm!

Opening Weekend

Our four-day Victoria Day long weekend allowed two days to prepare the Ulgedook Cottage for another season of use and enjoyment, and two days of leisure in our favorite part of the province.  Activities included lazing on the beach, yard sales (much to Heather's delight... NOT), exploring new parks and trails (including those at the Lunenburg Municipal Activity and Recreation Complex (MARC) and Miller Point Peace Park), dining at Best Cove Coffee Gallery and being enthusiastically greeted by Wendy (owner/operator and now dear friend), visiting neighbours who we haven't seen for months, and simply relaxing in the solitude and silence of the cottage.

Next weekend will be Hike Green Bay-Broad Cove Trail and Greenfield Drag Races.

Yippee, summer is here!

It's a new year

Yup, a new year... 2015. And what happened to 2014, you ask?  Well, I say, I'll have to catch up later.  As for now though, I want to post a photo of my new sunflowers, destined to adorn Ulgedook Cottage.  These flowers were custom crafted by Blair Brown of Be Steel My Art.  Thanks Blair!
